Hi, I'm still building my tool collection along with trying to build a guitar. Nut slotting files are particularly expensive but I've seen gauged "saw rods" for sale in various locations that are considerably less expensive. From the close up pictures, they almost look like the threaded section of a machine screw, but at diameters similar to a set of nut files. If I cut the slots with a .010" saw first so that these "saw rods" don't wander as they cut, will they work reasonably well? Anybody have any experience with them? Thanks! |

Do a quick search for welding torch tip cleaners. A set costs something like four bucks and it's the standard "make-do" cheap nut file set. . . |

Ditto on torch tip cleaners. Home Depot sells them. They are SLOW cutting but that's ok if you're only doing 1 nut a year or so |

I did my 1st few guitars with torch cleaners and still use them occasionally if I need a size of file I do not have, start with a size smaller file and open up to size with the cleaners. What I used to do is start the 3 treble slots with my zona saw .012" and the 3 bass with my fret slotting back saw. The slots came out great except it was way too time consuming which I quickly realized after getting real fret files. Fred |
